Resistance 3 ROM Description
While the picture Insomniac paints with Resistance 3 is expansive and complex, they keep the colors safely within the lines. And unfortunately, the only two colors they use are grey and brown. You play as Joe Capelli, one of many humans fighting against an army of alien invaders called the Chimera, as he races to New York to try and keep his wife and son safe ultimately. What gives the classic human versus alien cliché a nice spin is the alternate history setting, which puts you in the US during the early 1950s. While gamers are familiar with the World War 2 era, it still proves to be a nice escape from the slew of modern military and futuristic shooters we have today.
In terms of shooting, Resistance 3 is unsurprisingly by the book—however, credit to Insomniac for really polishing the well-worn scenarios we’re all used to. Seasoned gamers will definitely recognize the train level, escort mission, defending a fixed position until backup arrives, etc.
One easy trap Insomniac could have fallen into was throwing in the standard cache of FPS weapons without a second thought. Instead, they took the basic loadout and gave each weapon a fresh spin. Every gun comes equipped with a secondary fire mode that offers novel and often gruesome ways of disposing of enemies. For instance, what would otherwise be a run-of-the-mill revolver in other games now comes with the ability to detonate explosive rounds you just fired remotely. The wide variety of weapons and their secondary modes, evenly introduced throughout the game, encourage you to really switch up weapons depending on the scenario. The result is really satisfying shooter combat that never manages to get old over the 5-hour campaign.
Looking past some flaws, Resistance 3 still has a decent story with really solid voice acting. It’s nothing deep you’ll analyze on multiple levels, but Joe’s devotion to his wife and son is enough to really get you rooting for him. Whether it’s the story motivating you to see it out until the end or the combat system keeping you using these fun weapons until it’s over, Resistance 3’s single-player campaign is definitely worth experiencing.
