Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate ROM Description

Team Ninja claims Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate to be the ultimate fighting entertainment experience, and it truly lives up to that. It’s essentially an expanded version of the original Dead or Alive 5 that was released on PS3 in 2013.

New Character Additions

First off, let’s see what’s new. Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate introduces five new characters: Rachel and Momiji from the Ninja Gaiden series, Jackie Bryant from Virtua Fighter, and two returning fan favorites, Leon and Ein, boosting the character roster to 29. There are also five new stages added: Desert, an aircraft carrier from Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge, Sky City Tokyo from Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 (which features a giant Buddha statue as an interactive danger zone), and Forest and Lost World returning from Dead or Alive 3. Zack’s Island is also featured on the disc, so you don’t have to download anything for that stage.

Changes in Game Modes

Nothing has been added to the Story mode of Dead or Alive 5. The Survival mode has been improved slightly with new items that appear after eliminating an enemy. These don’t really do anything other than add a few extra points to your score, but it’s a nice little touch, bringing back some elements from previous Dead or Alive games.

A new Team Fight mode has been added, which allows you to play locally in a seven-versus-seven match. Unlike Tekken Tag Tournament, you can’t switch players during the fight, so you have to be careful in your selection of players and where you’re going to place your best characters.

The Training mode has been improved to feature more detailed information on the moves you perform. We also have the Tutorial mode from Dead or Alive 5 Plus and a new combo challenge. These provide all the tools for both new and veteran players to improve their game if they feel they need a little more practice.

The Online mode has been improved with better netcode, resulting in less lag whilst fighting, and provides more details on your opponent’s connection speed. A new feature of the Online mode is the ability to join a tag partner during tag matches, where you can have two-on-two battles, two-on-one battles, etc. This is perfect if you’d like to team up with a friend online. Unfortunately, this mode is currently completely non-functional on PS3 emulators.

Other Content Upgrades

A few little features added to the game include a movie theater, where you can watch all the unlocked scenes from the Story mode, as well as victory and defeat poses that you unlock for each of the characters as you unlock them, and you can do that in any costume of your choice.

Those who often prefer offline content may feel a little let down as the new additions don’t really provide much longevity to the game.
