Super Mario Maker ROM Description

Super Mario Maker for 3DS has two main parts of content. Nintendo has included 100 levels made by themselves, which was already an enormous amount of content, but there’s also the level creation part, which will definitely satisfy players’ creativity. The game was originally released on the Wii U, and finally, Nintendo also brought it to the 3DS after a year.

The game has a brand new world map with 18 different worlds, including 100 ready-made levels. The brand new custom level creation is the main selling point of this game and Nintendo has done it extremely well. The instructions are super intuitive and you’ll surely be able to easily master the tools. It’s really simple: just pick an item from the menu and drag it onto the screen. If you make a mistake, don’t worry, erase and try again, or erase the whole level and start over from the beginning.

Level Themes and Elements

You can choose from a few different Super Mario graphic themes. These themes include Super Mario Bros 1 and 3, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros. With each theme there are a few level designs like underground, castle, and airship. All of these themes are available right from the start, unlike the Wii U version, where when you first start making levels, you only have about half of the total level elements to choose from. However, as you continue making levels, more elements will unlock. It may take a little while to unlock everything, but it happens fast enough that you won’t get frustrated waiting, and in the meantime, you’ll get familiar with the initial elements and understand better how they work.

Each level theme will have seven gameplay elements. For example, if you choose Super Mario Bros 3, you won’t be able to wall jump or if you choose New Super Mario Bros you won’t be able to use caves. Most of the items are the same between games, except for the power-up items.

Custom Level Creation

If you’ve seen videos of Super Mario Maker, you’ll know that players can get very creative with level designs, and this allows for some really amazing levels to be made. The 3DS has many elements that the Wii U version initially didn’t have, like checkpoints and pink coins, which is an advantage right off the bat. You may find that some items can be used in ways you never thought of before. For example, make a flying turtle by giving it a wing item. Want to make a giant Bowser? Feed him a mushroom. The possibilities are endless, and we think you could spend a lot of time combining items to see what you can come up with.

At any time during the level creation process, you can test-play it yourself to see if anything needs adjusting. You may find a section impossible to pass without a certain power-up, so you need to go back and add a block with a fire flower inside, or you just need to add a few blocks so Mario can jump up. However, what’s the point of making levels that only you can play? Once you complete your masterpiece, you can share it with others via StreetPass or with friends via local play.

Improvements Over the Wii U Version

Super Mario Maker on the 3DS has made several improvements. It has themes and items available right away, unlike the Wii U version, which took some time to unlock. Where you had to play for a while to unlock sub-areas in the original game, on the 3DS version, you can start using them immediately. The item menu has also been changed to suit the 3DS screen. A nice touch is you can also collaborate when making levels and send them to friends via local play to continue refining the level.
