Gameplay Starts Similar to Mario Power Tennis

This game starts similarly to Mario Power Tennis. Bowser challenged the Mushroom Kingdom residents to a baseball tournament. They were all excited to accept. This game is a clear and serious blend between Mario and baseball, with absolutely no satire or joking around.

Basic Baseball with Mario Twists

The gameplay is basically like traditional baseball, 3 strikes you’re out, 3 outs then switch sides. However there are some elements that make the game unique and matches more unpredictable. Each player has the ability to power up their pitches and hits with star power but once the stars run out, those fiery apocalypse pitches also disappear.

Battles for Stars

The 1vs1 matches give you a chance to regain some stars by dominating easily and you can recruit colorful pitchers from the opposing team. Mario Superstar Baseball is certainly not a typical baseball game. There are no normal fly balls here. You can’t stop the freaky plays when they get swallowed up by vicious flora.

Mario Style Moves

The Mario flair really comes into play when it’s time to bat/pitch. The batter or pitcher can do regular throws and swings or use the A button and control stick for more powerful throws and swings, sometimes in the case of the pitcher throw slower or a curveball. Deciding on which of these to use is all a matter of tricking your opponent.

RPG Style Single Player

The single player mode is a simple RPG as you wander a neon continent looking for rivals. Each player has a list of objectives to complete in order to raise their stats. You’ll also play a series of minigames to earn coins, which can be used to buy super pitches like Donkey Kong’s banana curve.

Peppy Music and Voices

The sound includes powerful, cartoonish effects along with loud Mario music to excite you, at least in the menu. The in-game music is a bit more subdued but still great. Nintendo also voice-acted some of it. It’s certainly what you’d expect from a game like this, with characters doing their trademark phrases and screams.
