Super Mario 3D Land marked the first time the Mario series landed on the Nintendo 3DS system in late 2011. This special game was developed by Nintendo EAD Tokyo and released exclusively on the 3DS. The game has sold over 20 million copies worldwide, becoming one of the greatest Mario games of all time.

Familiar Story

It couldn’t be simpler, once again, Nintendo retells an extremely familiar story: Princess Peach is kidnapped by the turtle boss Bowser for no apparent reason. Reluctantly, the plumber Mario takes on the role of hero and sets out to rescue the princess. However, this time there is a small new twist that greatly affects the whole story. On the night Bowser sneaked in and kidnapped the princess, a huge storm happened covering the entire mushroom kingdom. Also because of this storm, the magical leaves on the Super Leaf tree were all blown away. Mario receives a challenging warning letter from Bowser. Without a moment’s hesitation, Mario and the Toads quickly set out to rescue the princess without knowing that danger is lurking when the monsters in the way have received power from the Power Leaf and become much more dangerous.

Like the Galaxy games, 3D Land is a completely linear platformer. While Galaxy’s gameplay balanced beautifully between linearity and sandbox, Mario 3D is completely linear.
