Colony Wars ROM Description
Colony Wars is a space combat game on the PlayStation that was developed and published by Psygnosis. This brand was successful for the studio, and they went on to make two sequels, Colony Wars: Vengeance and Colony Wars: Red Sun.
Colony Wars is set in a distant future where resources in the Solar System have been depleted, but humanity has expanded its influence to other star systems. But when one colony realized that their resources were exclusively for Earth’s benefit, they tried to secede from Earth’s rule, only for their planet to be obliterated.
In response, the other colonies formed the League of Free Worlds, and as a nameless pilot, you had to join the Allies to push back Earth’s Colonial Navy and gain independence.
Although Colony Wars has a simple storyline, it is divided into acts, each comprising many missions. The way you complete the missions will have long-term effects on the story, so reading the mission briefings carefully before fighting is very important.
Missions can range from escorting to simply taking out enemy fighters. In any case, you will be piloting a multitude of spaceships throughout the branching campaign. Unfortunately, you cannot choose which ship to take into battle, and they cannot be upgraded.
The combat revolves around destroying their shields with anti-shield lasers and then finishing them off with conventional lasers. You are also equipped with secondary weapons like missiles, torpedoes, and even a grappling hook for specific circumstances. The ship control mechanism is quite responsive, executed with the D-pad steering or optional analog stick. All ships can be flipped over with L2/R2.
As mentioned, the story is simple, but Colony Wars has databases that provide further insights about its universe, such as star systems, planets, spacecraft, pilots, battles, etc. This is good for the game because without them, Colony Wars would seem shallow. Finally, the score by Tim Wright is quite nice, using orchestral themes to create urgency and atmosphere.
