Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy is a music game inspired by the great tunes from the original series. The game is available for 3DS, and you can currently download its CIA ROM file for free to play on the 3DS emulator.

The gameplay is not much different from other rhythm music games like Rhythm Thief or even Guitar Hero. You choose four characters from your favorite Final Fantasy games to explore the world and fight monsters to the beat. Complete the stage without depleting your total HP bar, and you’ll level up and gain more skills and items.

The game has three main modes: series mode, challenge mode, and tower of chaos. The series mode includes optional opening and ending tracks, where you tap notes as they approach the crystal; a screen that moves on the world map, sliding and tapping in a given direction; a screen that fights monsters with quick taps; and an event song where you hit the beat while the game’s cinematics plays in the background.

Beat songs in this mode to unlock them in Challenge Mode, where you can unlock higher difficulties as well as a practice mode. The game also includes RPG elements such as stats, experience points, abilities, and items, but I found them not too important because most of the focus is on the music.

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy celebrates some of the original series’ best music. It allows you to enjoy these tunes again in a completely unique way.
