Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception feels alive in ways so few other games do – two pieces of fruit reacting individually when jostled; there are many little touches like that here, and they feel both stylized and motivated, like the finest animated films. Lighting has been especially emphasized, and the camera always finds the perfect angle to keep the player in the moment and showcase the action in the best way. And oh boy, there is so much action here! There are several truly spectacular set pieces supported by technical virtuosity. These sequences are generally great fun and stirring even after you stop and think about what inspired them.

Drake, Sully, and other characters all have distinct personalities and charms; they are proper characters who are as memorable and real as you can find in books or films. I like the limitless wealth part, anyway! There may not be another cast in gaming that can portray such a wide range of emotions this well. Uncharted three is thrilling, touching, and laugh-out-loud funny.

Where Drake’s Deception stumbles before catching itself and pushing on is its collection of getaway sequences. You will feel the thrill when your fingers work together to escape death while finding hints of light or color indicating safe holds or paths. Most pure firefights lack imagination, so they stand out against the rest of the very creative game. Melee is a viable, if not preferable, strategy this time, and there is an interesting timing element to throwing grenades back at enemies, something Nate has learned since last time. Players may enjoy this a lot more at lower difficulty levels, a notch or two below their usual.

Cutscenes bridge one level to the next to lend a sense of purpose, but the scenarios are non-canon, mixing characters and settings from all three Uncharted games. It is simple and not as polished as the campaign but very enjoyable.

There are some missed opportunities and unresolved threads in the conclusion. However, the game is easily recommended, even to some who may not consider themselves gamers. Drake’s Deception has some flaws but also soul. It’s worth mentioning as an example or counterexample of what the medium can or should do. Other titles may handle combat better than Uncharted, but none are as consistently fun, inspiring, and evocative as this refined formulaic version. The overall experience is immersive and grand, but the intimate moments full of heart and subtext linger long after putting down the controller.
