Bayonetta is certainly one of the most impressive action games we’ve seen in a long time. The game puts you in the role of a witch named Bayonetta, using some evil magic that is enough to make its predecessor look lackluster.

Bayonetta’s plot seems to delight in its absurdity. Long ago, two wizarding clans were at war, with one side nearly wiped out. You play as Bayonetta, the last Umbra sorceress, who has lost her memory and is pursued by Heaven’s army, who look like twisted biblical angels on steroids. Your allies are few, among them a caricatured version of Danny DeVito, whose appearance is already absurd, and a Morpheus impersonator named Rodin, who sells you demonic weapons. As the plot progresses, Bayonetta gradually regains her memories.

Bayonetta is a linear game and is dominated by its plot, although you may not realize it the first time you play it. That’s because the fighting gameplay is extremely strong and somewhat stereotypical. You’ll fight dozens of angels or several building-sized bosses, get points for your performance, and watch a few cutscenes.

Don’t confuse adherence to formula with lack of creativity. Bayonetta may be textbook, but it’s far from ordinary. Very few monster types are repetitive, and the game is very good at mixing up monster types and encounters to keep you excited and surprised.

Bayonetta’s world is creative and free-spirited. The game has a lot of sexy elements, but not surprisingly, there are more than a few of Bayonetta’s pin-up moves and outfits. The music is a strange fusion of Japanese pop and jazz, often incompatible but making the playing experience especially exhilarating.

Bayonetta is one of the best options when it comes to action games on PS3. The combat system is the work of a master, and the entire game is vibrant, bold, and creative. It’s also an incredibly deep experience that encourages repeat play. If you want to enjoy the best action game of 2010, choose Bayonetta.
