Shin Megami Tensei 4: Apocalypse is actually a sequel to SMT4. Everything takes place after the events of the previous season’s neutral ending.

In Apocalypse, Flynn, Isabeau, Navarre, and other characters are returning characters from Shin Megami Tensei IV. You play as the new character Nanashi. Flynn is a samurai from the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado, while Nanashi is a hunter from Kinshicho. At the game’s beginning, you must quickly become a hunter due to unfortunate circumstances. After a few hours of playing, this feeling becomes natural. You die (Nanashi dies). This is when you meet Dagda, a demon who offers a contract to bring you back to life. And here it all begins.

The gameplay of Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse is very similar to its predecessor. You explore Tokyo, completing quests assigned by the Hunter Association. When you want to do side quests, you will enter demon lands or hunt specific demons in certain locations.

Talking about Shin Megami Tensei, it would be a mistake not to mention the support monsters. Apocalypse has more than 450 types of monsters with different strengths and weaknesses. It gives you freedom to choose from. Besides, the game also offers the function of combining monsters together to create stronger species that can then possess more special skills.

SMT4: Apocalypse runs on the same engine as SMT4 and reuses most of the models, and it shows. SMT4 was a beautiful game in 2013, and Apocalypse is, unsurprisingly, also a game that runs beautifully on the 3DS system. The scenes and the way they are designed look great on this small handheld.

Like all Megami Tensei games, the SMT4 Apocalypse soundtrack does not disappoint. Once again, we are greeted by a wonderful, expansive soundtrack. SMT4 Apocalypse has some old tracks from season 4, which are still as good as ever, but they also added some great new tracks like Team Krishna and Team Kinshicho.
