Monster Hunter Stories is a very good and attractive role-playing game set in the Monster Hunter world, but instead of becoming a hunter, you will play the role of a rider—a monster rider.

The story begins when your village is attacked by a crazed Nargacuga affected by the “Black Blight,”  a mysterious disease spreading across the land. Your character then participates in the coming-of-age ceremony to become an official rider and sets out with friends to find the egg of the legendary White Dragon. The plot has many unexpected twists, even quite dark in some segments, mentioning death, pain, and perhaps despair.

In the game, you will travel around the world, fighting monsters and monsters that you hatch from eggs—eggs that you “borrow” (an euphemism) from their nests. You can train and ride them to move. The combat system is turn-based, similar to rock-paper-scissors, with three types of attacks: power, technical, and speed, each counteracting another. After successfully performing attacks to overcome enemies, you will accumulate energy to ride your monster in battle, unleashing powerful attacks and extremely beautiful special skills that are different depending on the type of monster.

You will encounter familiar monsters in the Monster Hunter world and can fight them just by running into them. After defeating them, you will receive monster parts to craft better armor and weapons. In addition to the main mission, the game also has many side missions, and currently, you can still download a lot of free missions and items directly from the game.

Monster Hunter Stories has a variety of locations to explore, from grasslands and forests to snow-capped mountains and more. The game really surprised me. At first, I thought it was just a simple version of Monster Hunter for children, but I was completely wrong. While the graphics were limited by the 3DS’s capabilities, with the second game coming to the Switch, it seems like this problem has been resolved.

Monster Hunter Stories is a colorful, fun title with great characters, an engaging combat system, extensive customization, and a great story, all wrapped up in the Monster Hunter world. If you own a 3DS or want to play a monster game on a 3DS emulator, Monster Hunter Stories is definitely a game not to be missed.
