3D Gunstar Heroes is a classic run-and-gun game, a genre that originated in arcades. I say derived because while comparing with Konami’s Contra series is tempting, Gunstar Heroes reaches further with more flexible options, from weapons to the first four stages order. You start by choosing one of two characters with their play style. One character can run and shoot simultaneously, while the other can shoot in 8 directions but does not move while shooting. It is excellent to allow you to choose between two different play styles because they change how you enjoy the game. It would be even better if the two modes could switch between each other since some weapons are more suitable for one character than the other.

Regarding weapons, there are four basic types and two slots to carry. The four basic types include lightning that shoots lasers through multiple enemies, missiles that chase enemies, rapid-fire machine guns, and powerful short-range fire. In addition to the original weapon, you can double the same type to make it stronger or fill the second slot with another gun to create combos. You can create lightning that locks onto targets or rocket fire. The possibilities are creative and fun to experiment with.

3D Gunstar Heroes for N3DS has excellent level design. It always stays fresh with many variations and a fast pace that keeps players excited.
