ICO ROM Description
Ico, produced by Sony’s own studio, is the manifestation of Fumito Ueda’s passion for creating a unique game. The game was released exclusively for Sony’s PlayStation 2 in Japan and North America in 2001, hitting the Western regions in early 2002. Two decades later, you can enjoy this game again without the original system, thanks to PS2 emulators.
Ico puts us in the role of the titular character Ico, a horned boy shunned for his existence and prepared for sacrifice in an abandoned castle by being chained to a stone coffin. However, fate saved this boy while all others of his kind were callously discarded.
After a fierce struggle against the chains, the ancient stone foundation beneath the tomb collapsed, allowing him to escape. Ico was then thrown onto the floor below and knocked unconscious. He dreamed of climbing a tower amidst a storm with a shadow trapped in a cage, taking the shape of a girl. Startled awake, Ico leaned against the wall behind him, unaware the shadow forming on it had pulled him into the inky abyss.
Ico’s entire storyline is told through very little dialogue, is cryptic yet always intriguing, and urges you to explore more.
The game creates a lonely, cold, and unwelcoming atmosphere. It is reminiscent of the ruins Titus first found himself in Spire’s past in Final Fantasy 10.
Ico is primarily an action-adventure game introducing many mechanics later found in similar series like Uncharted. You control Ico and can run, jump, climb walls, and swing ropes, all activities synonymous with rebellious youth. However, instead of an adventure full of discovery and youthful curiosity, Ico is a tale of struggling against adversity.
