Devil May Cry ROM Description
Devil May Cry is an action-adventure game developed and published by Capcom. The game launched on PS2 in August 2001. It received positive feedback at the time, as it seemed to take the Resident Evil formula and combine it with swordplay combat gameplay. The game was incredibly popular and sold millions of copies on the PS2. The interesting thing about Devil May Cry is that it was originally developed to become Resident Evil 4. However, it seems that at some point Capcom decided to stop this project but not let the effort go to waste, and Devil May Cry was born.
The game begins with the main character, Dante, a demon hunter, sitting in his office. Suddenly, a woman named Trish rushed in on a motorcycle. Trish offers Dante a job to destroy the demon emperor Mundus, the same demon who killed his family 20 years ago. After agreeing to the job, Dante and Trish arrive at a creepy castle on a remote island. The plot continues to follow Dante as he explores the castle, cutting his way to the demon army to hopefully destroy Mundus. The plot is quite simple but still engaging, as it clearly doesn’t take itself too seriously, with enough funny lines and cool action to keep the player’s attention.
Devil May Cry takes the Resident Evil formula and adds a hack-and-slash combat system—something that makes the game a brand. The game focuses on players exploring a specific area, searching for keys and items to open locked doors they have seen before. There are a large number of missions that return to old areas, but Devil May Cry differs from Resident Evil in that it is divided into missions, helping players track objectives.
Devil May Cry’s combat system combines slashing and stabbing with third-person shooting. Initially, Dante only has one sword and two guns, but players unlock more weapons to choose the appropriate fighting style. Through key combinations, Dante can perform many different stick combos. The system encourages players to experiment with attacks and not rely on the same attacks too much.
For a game that’s nearly 20 years old, Devil May Cry looks impressive. The environments have a clear Gothic style throughout. Not only does the game world have personality, but the resources and textures are also very clear, not often seen in games of the time. The characters are also surprisingly detailed, although their costumes look a bit outdated.
The music is also very good, alternating between horror and electronic rock melodies that match the game style. The acting is also humorous, suitable for the game’s silly action style.
Devil May Cry still maintains its form after more than 20 years of being on the PS2 system. It looks very good and is easy to play. This is a great PS2 title that should not be missed in your collection.
