God of War was developed by SCE Santa Monica Studio in 2005, exclusively for the PlayStation 2. This game marked the beginning of one of the most successful franchises of all time. God of War can now be replayed on PC or Mobile if you use a PS2 emulator.

In God of War, you take on the role of Kratos, a very, very angry man. However, he has good reason to be that way, thanks to the mean God of War Ares. Kratos was originally a Spartan warrior serving the Olympian gods and was once a disciple of Ares himself but after Ares tricked him into killing his wife and child, a terrible strategy to strengthen him, Kratos, who needed no heart, was determined to take revenge. Goddess Athena then gave him the task of slaying Ares.

So, how does one kill a god? God of War gives you the answer – by retrieving Pandora’s Box. That is the crux of this adventure, all encased in a world formed around Greek mythology. God of War combines elements of adventure games with hack-and-slash gameplay, split between exploring, puzzles, and frantic button mashing. It is considered the best game on PS2 by many.

The fighting mechanism is key to the success of God of War. Kratos, as a Spartan warrior, does a lot of bad deeds under the rule of Ares. The game provides several weapons he can use, primarily the Blades of Chaos that Ares fused into Kratos’ hands. Kratos has basic moves like light and heavy attacks as well as the ability to grab enemies and kill them instantly. Additionally, the power upgrade mechanism is an important part of the gameplay, allowing you to create more damaging combos.

Thanks to Kratos’ good relationship with the gods, he has the opportunity to use magic. The gods will give you magical power, and this can be used as long as your magic bar is full. For example, the Army of Hades will unleash souls of the dead to fight alongside you while Poseidon’s Rage will allow you to inflict damage on multiple foes at once within a certain radius around you. They are very useful in situations where you are overwhelmed and worth using your magic. Like normal attacks, they can also be upgraded.

God of War builds a wonderful world of Greek mythology. By combining impressive aerial shots, the world truly comes alive and still retains its wow factor even when released on an old system like the PS2.
