In the late 80s – early 90s, the beat ’em up genre was very popular. Surely many people still remember the classic games of this genre such as Ninja Gaiden, Shinobi, Final Fight… Now it is gradually revived: in 2004, Sega released a completely 3D sequel to Shinobi for PlayStation 2 (however it did not really meet the expectations), next year Tecmo plans to release the sequel to the legendary game Ninja Gaiden. But this time, the famous company Capcom decided to go in a different direction from its competitors, by wrapping the old gameplay that has been tested over the years in a new, extremely stylish and unique shell. The result of this experiment is Viewtiful Joe, which combines 2D gameplay, allowing movement in only one plane, 3D graphics, and some interesting ideas. But is all that enough to create a classic? What is Capcom’s latest work: a new take on an old genre or just a shiny product? You have to experience it to get the answer.

A little about the plot:

It all started when the main character Joe and his girlfriend Silvia once again watched their favorite movie starring their idol: Captain Blue. Suddenly, for no reason at all, Captain Blue is defeated in battle with the next villain, after which a giant shadow appears from the screen and kidnaps Silvia. The main hero has no other choice but to go into the movie to save his lover and replace Captain Blue as the one who saves the world. As you guessed, the plot is not so unique, but it still fits the game perfectly. The most important thing in Viewtiful Joe is the gameplay and style. Does this saying seem boring? Maybe, but only for those who have never witnessed Capcom’s new work.
