The video game Shadow the Hedgehog was created by Sega Studio USA, the former Sonic Team subsidiary of Sega, for the Nintendo GameCube, PlayStation 2, and Xbox gaming systems. Introduced in March 2005, the game was originally displayed in North America on November 15, in Europe on November 18, and in Japan on December 15. It was based on the character Shadow the Hedgehog from Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog series. The third and last game in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, Shadow the Hedgehog was created by Sega Studio USA. Later, in early 2008, the studio reconnected with the Japanese Sega team.

Recent games such as Sonic Adventure and Sonic Heroes have established the genre that Shadow the Hedgehog belongs to as three-dimensional platformers. The player must select the game type to play as most levels have three alternative missions: “Hero,” “Dark,” and “Normal.” However, some levels only have two sides. The game’s story and the stages that become accessible later are influenced by the missions that the player selects. The game’s tagline alludes to this kind of gameplay: “Hero or villain? You make the decision.”

The story revolves around Shadow’s quest to discover his history despite having amnesia and being created by Dr. Eggman’s grandpa Gerald Robotnik.
