Well, Def Jam Fight for New York was the game that did just that. In 2003, when Def Jam Vendetta was released and was very successful, they immediately started production on the follow-up. And Fight for NY was truly an awesome sequel. Gone were the WWE-style wrestling moves, replaced with raw, bloody, no-holds-barred street fighting.

The story mode of Def Jam: Fight for New York is quite engaging as you need to break D-Mob out of the police car taking him to prison after the events of the previous game. He’s so grateful that he recruits you into his crew. You go around clubs and bars taking over locations owned by the rival crew leader Crow, played by Snoop Dogg. The story is good, with plenty of cutscenes and driving segments to keep you playing.

The fighter roster increased from 40 to 75, with some more well-known hip-hop artists. This was undoubtedly one of the best fighting games of 2004 that you shouldn’t miss. The main story cast includes Snoop Dogg, Method Man, Sticky Fingaz, Busta Rhymes, Fat Joe and D-Mob voiced by Christopher Judge. You also encounter others like Ice-T, Ludacris, Redman, and even non-music people like Danny Trejo.

The fighting mechanics are really good. You can choose from 3 out of 5 fighting styles for your character: kickboxing, street fighting, martial arts, wrestling and submissions. The combos you can create are pretty fun. This is not Mortal Kombat, so it’s not overly complex.

Like Vendetta, Def Jam: Fight for New York brings back Blazing moves activated by filling the blaze meter and flicking the right stick in any direction. You need to activate it and grab your opponent, then flick the stick in your desired direction and watch the magic happen.
