Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 is a bundle of two releases in the Super Mario game series. We have a remake of the original 1988 Super Mario Bros. 3 game on the NES and the fourth as well as final installment in the Super Mario Advance series.

Regarding Super Mario Bros. 3, it goes back to the basics and hallmarks of this game line. You return to the Mushroom Kingdom for a new adventure. This time, Bowser’s kids, the Koopalings, have taken over seven different worlds in the Mushroom Kingdom. They have turned all the kings into animals and are wreaking havoc. Therefore, Mario has to go through, clean up and finally defeat Bowser himself.

Regarding this new Super Mario Advance 4 version, it is basically the same game. It doesn’t really change much of the Super Mario Bros 3 core formula. The differences it makes are primarily superficial. They upgraded the graphics a bit so you have some parallax scrolling in the background, character sprites have better color depth, the whole game looks better than the original. The sound has been improved to take full advantage of the Game Boy Advance’s synthesizing capabilities, but they have also added in little voice samples for Mario when he dies or picks up a power-up as in previous Super Mario Advance games.

In summary, Super Mario Advance 4 has the entire Super Mario Bros 3 package, which is a phenomenal platformer even today. The whole game still holds up very well despite being released 14 years ago. If you haven’t played this game in a long time, this is a good chance to download its ROM and play it for free on a GBA emulator.
