Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team for GameBoy Advance opens up a new branch of the Pokemon series as it is completely different in terms of gameplay.

Instead of traditional RPG gameplay, Red Rescue Team is a turn-based strategy game. It is a top-down grid perspective, similar to Final Fantasy Tactics, where you move your team members and attack your opponents. The difference here is that you only control one Pokemon, and every action you take triggers the actions of all the surrounding Pokemon. If you move, your teammates and enemies move, if you attack, they all attack each other. This speeds up the pace of the battles. It is faster than the traditional gameplay we know: pause, select menu, attack, watch your opponent attack. Honestly, I actually prefer this approach because it is more fun and full of surprises.

Like the original Pokemon game, each of your Pokemon can have up to 4 different moves and a weaker basic attack. When you run out of PP you have to use your basic attack and wait for your PP to refill.

The basic gameplay loop is you go to town, assemble a team of three Pokemon, buy supplies, TMs, take on rescue side quests and then go do them in dungeons. After completing the quests you earn points and get rewards. The game allows you to use these points to increase your team’s ranking.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team is not as popular as traditional Pokemon games but it is a fun game despite being quite monotonous. I like the story and battle system more than the usual turn-based gameplay. If you love strategy games like this but with a Pokemon theme then Red Rescue Team is not a bad choice. The game is available for free download and you can play it easily on a GBA emulator.
