Pokémon Emerald was released by Nintendo in Japan on September 16, 2004 and in North America on May 1, 2005. It was the last Pokemon game in the series to be released on the Game Boy Advance, marking the successful life of this console. Honestly, Nintendo tried their best to combine all the good points of the previous versions Ruby and Sapphire into a single package called Emerald, and they did it well.

Pokémon Emerald took full advantage of the available hardware on the Game Boy Advance, thereby bringing a perfect playing experience. Proof is that you’ll now have to shell out thousands of dollars on eBay if you want to play the game on the Original system.

The story of Pokémon Emerald has a strange start compared to the rest of the series. Our protagonist moves to a new area. After moving into a new house and entering town, you meet Professor Birch, who is in a panic after being attacked by a dog. He is your new neighbor.

To save the professor, you need to choose one of three starter Pokémon: Mudkip, Torchic, and Treecko. The choice will of course depend on your play style, as each starter Pokémon has its own strengths and weaknesses.

What makes the game great is the engaging early stages with lots to do and explore. It’s paced perfectly and makes you feel like you’re really on an adventure with lots of challenges but also lots of fun. All the original routes have a lot of options and there are tons of great Pokémon to catch and build your favorite team from the start.

Pokémon Emerald Version is the perfect combination of Ruby and Sapphire because you don’t focus on just one group of villains but both. You get to see how the two groups Aqua and Magma interact on a deeper level and Aqua’s approach can be different from Magma’s.

Magma’s goal is to turn the entire planet into land while Aqua wants the opposite, turning it into sea. Your mission is to stop both. Emerald does a great job of pacing the story, not being too long or too short, and the game flows very smoothly with plenty of challenges, gyms, and new lands to explore.

After the story, Pokémon Emerald still has a lot to do thanks to the Battle Frontier added to the sequel. In the Battle Frontier, you are challenged to defeat 7 Frontier Brains to win icons and earn points to exchange for rare or unobtainable items.

In the sequel, you also get the chance to catch Kyogre and Groudon, which is great because it’s one of the few opportunities in Pokémon where you can catch all three legendary in the same game.

Emerald was the last official title on the Game Boy Advance series and it made perfect use of the hardware. Combined with all the extra features like the contests and the good sequel, it’s easy to see why many consider Emerald to be one of the best games in the series.
