Super Smash Bros. Ultimate ROM Description
Super Smash Bros Ultimate for Nintendo Switch is a reunion of the series, bringing together all the old and new characters that have appeared in the Smash Bros. games. This means that characters like Snake, Pokemon Trainer, Pichu and Young Link all return in this new version.
There are also a lot of changes to the game’s visuals and cosmetics that make it feel more tournament or arcade friendly. 1vs1 matches now highlight the match score after each death. Deadly Smash moves will zoom in on the attack instead of just showing a red streak like before. Explosion zone now graphs everyone’s location on and off screen when they are close to death.
Many people call Super Smash Bros Ultimate an upgraded version of Smash 4 but in reality the mechanism is completely different. A lot of the characters feel different despite keeping the same attacks.
The two new characters in the game feel very different from anything in Smash Bros. They are very unique. The Inkling character not only brought Splatoon to Smash but also the mechanics of that series. The Inkling must constantly replenish his tank with ink for his attacks to remain effective. Ridley is a giant monster which certainly makes him the biggest target in a match but also the biggest threat. Its attractive attack is ruthless and perfect for finishing with heavy damage. Accumulating damage is also easy with a forward-facing Smash that deals 50% damage instantly.
Personally, I expected a more traditional Smash Bros. sequel. That’s what I hoped and expected but this entire special or anniversary edition still shows a lot of potential. Smash Bros Ultimate isn’t just Smash Wii U with tweaked 3DS content, but instead it’s a celebration of how far the series has come through its many iterations and proposes subtle changes to gameplay mechanics that will no doubt is something you have to work to adapt to, even for the most seasoned Smash players.
But those are just my quick impressions of Smash Bros Ultimate for Nintendo Switch. I’m still going back to play it this weekend. If you have any specific questions about gameplay mechanics or certain characters, let me know in the comments section below and I’ll try to answer as soon as possible. I won’t go into detail about the mechanics because there are so many unique and different things in this game compared to Smash 4 that there are a lot of things to mention. But if you have questions about specific mechanics, let me know in the comments.
