Unit 13 is the first third-person shooter released on the PlayStation Vita and comes from a veteran developer, so expectations were high for Unit 13. The game was released exclusively on the system on March 6th, 2012.

Unit 13 is a third-person shooter developed by Zipper Interactive. It uses a cover system which I’m sure many will recognize: find a wall or ledge and lean up against it. I couldn’t help but be reminded of Uncharted as I played this game. The only difference here is that lining up headshots felt more accurate and precise.

Objectives can range from collecting data, rescuing hostages, disarming bombs, neutralizing targets and destroying enemy equipment. The only difference is the kind of restriction placed on you during a mission. For example, one mission may require stealth so you have to get in and out before being spotted, or the dreaded deadline missions where you’re given limited time to complete all objectives.

Visually, this is one of the best-looking games on the PlayStation Vita. Character models and environmental detail are top-notch, but it’s the little things that make the game stand out. You can see dirt and debris flying as you move through a level, glass you’re hiding behind shatters from bullets, and smoke is visible in the distance.

Unit 13 doesn’t innovate anything, nor does it try to. It’s just constant, challenging yet fun gameplay. If you don’t like shooter games, you should give this one a try. The game has easy-to-grasp controls, varied objectives and really fun gunplay. Unit 13 for the PlayStation Vita is highly recommended.
