Characters

The inhabitants of the underground world of Undertale are funny and lovely characters, making you laugh at their quirky personalities, at the very least. But the best characters are those who know they’re in a game, break the fourth wall, or remember what you did, no matter if you want them to or not.

Gameplay

Undertale’s gameplay mechanics are quite different from typical RPGs. Outside of combat, you can slowly explore the town and talk to NPCs like other role-playing games. But the combat system is really strange.

After each action, you have to dodge the enemy’s attack by moving the soul. It’s quite impressive because each enemy has different attacks, not just challenging but also humorous, suitable for themselves.

Pacifist Aspect

But what makes Undertale stand out is the ability to befriend enemies. You can interact with them by talking, joking, and praising them, and you can befriend them instead of constantly attacking them. At first, it seems boring, but it will be worthwhile when you learn about them and how their attacks change.

In traditional RPGs, enemies only exist for exp and as bosses. But in Undertale, every enemy has a personality, story, dreams, and friends. They are very interesting to talk to during battles.

World and Characters

Interacting with monsters instead of constantly attacking may seem boring at first, but learning about them and how their attacks change is worthwhile. For example, you can complement a ghost, and it will be touched, attacking more gently. After another compliment, it will cry tears so you don’t die.

Outside of combat is a wonderfully designed world with lots of jokes and lovely characters. The way characters are introduced is one of the funniest moments.

Story and Tone

The story maintains humor throughout the game, except for parts that need a dark and serious atmosphere to motivate the player to move forward. On your journey through the dangerous underground world, you will meet many quirky characters and make friends and enemies. And you decide their fate.

Visuals and Audio

Undertale returns to the classic 8-bit graphic style of the NES era. This style is based on Mother but looks smoother and more detailed thanks to modern technology. The main character is designed genderless so male players can see them as a boy while female players see them as a girl. That’s a clever design.

Undertale’s music is not just background music or soundtrack but art. Each melody carries the emotional weight and gravity necessary for battles or locations.

The music creates 50% of the game’s atmosphere, letting your mind wander and make up the other half of that world.

Endings

Undertale has many different endings, but the three main ones are a neutral ending if you don’t kill anyone, a punitive ending if you kill some characters, and a bad ending if you destroy everything. You are rewarded or punished based on your actions, which makes Undertale’s endings so great.
