SteamWorld Dig ROM Description
Story and Game Setting
Rusty inherits an ancient mine in Tumbleton after his uncle Joe’s mysterious death. Rusty takes over his uncle’s research and continues digging deeper into the mine, finding what remains of human civilization the deeper he goes.
The art style is very simplistic but gets the job done well. The setting is a steampunk Wild West world with robots. They have a slightly defective look, but that gives them unique charm.
Graphics
The visuals are very vivid and full of life for what would otherwise be a drab underground world. The characters and story are unique, while most enemies are just palette swaps. The backgrounds in some areas look amazing depending on the lighting.
The music in SteamWorld Dig is very subtle. You don’t really notice it much while playing. Though the melodies are more than just simple ambient noise, they easily fade into the background. The music only stands out when you gain a level, die, or during cutscenes.
Gameplay Mechanics
SteamWorld Dig starts off slow but gets more exciting after the first hour. Your goal is to find out why your uncle died and keep digging deeper into the mine.
Initially, you have no gear or abilities, but you diligently mine ore, defeat enemies, and do other digging tasks. As you collect resources, you can slowly upgrade equipment to dig faster, making progress smoother as you go deeper. The deeper you go, the harder digging becomes, so you have to constantly upgrade.
Power-ups are important as there are areas you can’t pass without them. Early on you get a run ability to jump higher, a double jump that damages enemies, a drill to break rocks, and a punch to hit faraway blocks.
Your lantern allows you to see in the dark but runs on a timer, limiting your time underground to a few minutes per trip. If you don’t get any upgrades on the way, the light will run out.
There are many small secrets to find in the mine and upgrades. You’ll spend a lot of time unlocking all upgrades and achievements.
Conclusion
Mixing Dig Dug with a bit of Metroid gives you SteamWorld Dig. Developer Image & Form knew exactly what they were making, and its success proves it. Download the game ROM below then you can play it for free on a PS Vita emulator.
