SteamWorld Dig 2’s story picks up shortly after the first game ended. This time, you take control of Dorothy, one of the NPCs from the previous title. She is trying to find Rusty, who disappeared following the events of the first game.

Dorothy travels to the mining town of El Machino, where she hears rumors of a robot resembling Rusty being spotted in the area.

In her search for Rusty, Dorothy encounters a cult worshipping Rusty, a group of mutated humans living in caves filled with toxic waste, and even befriends a technological fire spirit named Finn.

A great thing about the first game was its simplicity. But sometimes simplicity leads to some issues, and Steamworld Dig 2 has addressed them. Plus, Dorothy has many more abilities than Rusty.

At its core, Steamworld Dig 2 is identical to the first game. You dig through mines to collect ore and upgrade your gear to dig deeper and longer into the mines. Dorothy does have some new tools, like a grappling hook and jetpack.

The grappling hook allows you to latch onto walls and cave ceilings, greatly aiding mobility. The jetpack provides a boost in midair and can destroy some blocks and enemies. It makes traveling upwards very easy.

Getting around is way more fun compared to the first game. Combat has also improved but still mostly revolves around smacking enemies with a hammer.

SteamWorld Dig 2’s graphics have been significantly upgraded compared to its predecessor. Everything still retains the quirky steampunk world vibe, but it’s like they’ve been given a fresh coat of paint. The characters have unique personalities conveyed through their design, and the mines feel more lively. All of this gives you a real sense of being stuck underground.

Although the gameplay seems less simple than the first, Steamworld Dig 2 has way more content with many improvements to graphics and gameplay mechanics. If you liked Steamworld Dig 1, you’ll certainly like Steamworld Dig 2. Its ROM is now available on ROMsFUN, and you can download it for free.
