In short, Soul Sacrifice is a lot like Monster Hunter. That will let you know what you’re getting into – basically slaying monsters continuously in enclosed environments. What fuels you is the standard RPG elements of leveling up and perfecting each stage, but those are just the norm, and luckily, Soul Sacrifice takes a different approach to these elements in this genre.

To start off, there’s an interesting story right from the beginning. The world is in disorder, ruled by a man named Magusar. You are one of his prisoners until you stumble upon Librum, a talking book that holds the history of Magusar. You must read Librum and relive past battles, leveling yourself up and encountering more difficult battles as the book progresses.

What’s interesting is you’re given the option to fight the end boss anytime you like, but reading Librum and empowering up is probably a wiser option. Between the battle pages is where the story unfolds through narration, which is eerily dark and intriguing.

Fighting monsters is what you’ll be doing the most of in Soul Sacrifice, and it really opens up when you’re given all the variables. When a monster has been slain, you’re given the option to save it or sacrifice it. Doing either will increase your health or magic levels. You can choose to build your defense or your offense, and there is a limit – you can only level up 100 times for both attributes.

There are actual attacks called Offerings with many varieties like fire, ice, and poison; some are weapons, some are straight-up magic, some are long-range, and some are close combat. You can customize your Offering loadout anytime by mapping them to buttons. You can carry up to 6 Offerings into battle; press R to access your second set. On top of that, you can also fuse or boost Offerings, opening even more variables.

Soul Sacrifice is a really good game. It does a lot of things to make the action RPG genre more compelling and that’s exactly what this kind of genre needs.
