Shovel Knight is an extremely well-crafted game. It harkens back to the golden era of notoriously difficult games in the late 80s and early 90s amidst a sea of pixel graphics and retro music.

The most appealing part of this game comes from the perfect blend of different gameplay elements. The game is not unfair, just simply very hard compared to modern games. This is a level of difficulty I have not faced since playing Rogue Legacy. If you like Rogue Legacy, you will probably like Shovel Knight as well. Shovel Knight continues to find ways to incorporate features inspired by classic platformers. It’s safe to say Shovel Knight would not exist without Megaman, Super Mario Bros 3 and The Legend of Zelda as the game takes inspiration from these classic franchises.

The game not only has solid gameplay, but aesthetically, it also delivers exactly what it needs to. Part of the reason Shovel Knight exemplifies the pixel art style so perfectly is because of the attention to detail and adherence to the limitations of the original NES hardware.

In total, the game only uses 4 colors that were not available on the original NES, leaving a palette of just 58 colors. To deny that this is a dedication to an aesthetic would be an insult. The music composed by Jake Kaufman is similarly authentic, having been composed on a program that exports the music as NES machine code.

It’s amazing how good controls and style can make a game. Combine that with some challenging gameplay, healthy amounts of humor, and an engaging story, and you have a modern classic.
