After proving its technical prowess with God of War: Chains of Olympus, developer Ready at Dawn continues its journey through Greek mythology with God of War: Ghost of Sparta.

Ghost of Sparta inherits the series’ iconic elements: excessive violence, giant boss battles, a seamless combat system, and a disregard for the lives of mythical creatures. Surely, the game will satisfy your bloodlust.

Ghost of Sparta is set between the events of God of War 1 and 2. The game begins with Kratos sitting on his throne as the new god of war after defeating Ares, although still haunted by his demon’s nightmare. The memories of his deceased wife and daughter are not the cause, but the pain of losing his younger brother Deimos, for which Kratos blames himself. Now, to fix things, he seeks guidance from Athena and finds himself killing almost anything in his path.

The plot progresses quickly, engaging you with twists and turns throughout the adventure. Overall, though, Ghost of Sparta feels like a one-way street of ruthless destruction with Kratos’s spiraling scythe. Whether you’re fighting a crowd of monsters or a boss that takes up the entire screen, the gameplay is the same: kill them all and move on.

Aside from that simplicity, things never get old, especially with the variety of enemies and epic locations to explore. You’ll be rushing through a volcano full of deadly traps one minute, then fighting for your life at the bottom of the Atlantis Sea the next. The level design is linear, with little space to explore other than a few hidden treasures. Progression includes essential platforming elements, climbing ropes, climbing down giant structures, swimming in underground tunnels, or simply jumping.

Unlike God of War 3, Ghost of Sparta focuses on action, skipping puzzles. The game only provides a few basic puzzles. Like previous parts, finishing the game will unlock some extra content. Quickly enter any of the 24 challenge rooms, and you’ll be led to unique objectives that further test your combat skills, forcing you to think creatively.

It’s no exaggeration to call Ghost of Sparta a technological wonder. Details are abundant, from the way the light flows through the dark hallway to the way the water drips on Kratos’s wet body. You will admire the most beautiful images that PSP can provide.

Ghost of Sparta doesn’t do anything revolutionary; it just offers most of what we expect from a God of War game: unique enemies, interesting level design, and more action.
