God of War: Chains of Olympus takes place a few years before the first game’s events. In this game, Kratos is still confident and loyal, doing the bidding of the gods and hoping they will take away his nightmares. The best way to describe this game is a scaled-down God of War console game. We will follow Kratos on an extensive journey through the underworld, ending with a battle against a god.

Classic God of War Gameplay on a Handheld

God of War: Chains of Olympus retains the classic frenetic, bloody, hack-and-slash gameplay of the series combined with puzzles. This is clearly an excellent game in terms of gameplay, but the most interesting thing is Kratos’ attitude. He is no longer an angry and brooding warrior on this journey, nor is he as much of a jerk. His mission is also more righteous.

Helios, the god of the Sun, has gone missing, and Morpheus, the god of Dreams, has infinite power without sunlight. Kratos is tasked with finding Helios and returning him to the sky, and along that path, he discovers his true nature.

The Tragic Hero’s Journey

Kratos is a monster, but more than just a monster, he is an unnecessary evil. Eventually, he has to sacrifice what little humanity he has left in order to save the world. He bets the gods’ promise over his one chance at happiness, and the painful irony is that it’s all for nothing, as Atlas will tell Kratos years later.

Thrilling Boss Battles

The bosses are very excited. The Basilisk is like the Hydra but breathes fire and pesters you more in its section. The Persian King is just a powerful man with some explosive attacks, but the way you kill him is fittingly brutal. Chiron is one of the best boss fights in the entire series. He has many moves that challenge your ability to dodge, block, counter, and use your magic. you can’t beat him until you come back with the Gauntlet of Zeus, which adds a bit of artistry to the duel between Kratos and Chiron.

Persephone challenges you in a similar way, forcing you to use all your tricks to take her down. Again, they are not as bombastic as the bosses of the first game, but they serve their purpose quite well and are very well-designed from a gameplay perspective.

A Must-Have for God of War Fans

In the end, Chains of Olympus for PSP is exactly what it needed to be – a smaller, more intimate look at Kratos and this version of Greek mythology. This game helps players understand why God of War 2 happened and why God of War 3 needed to happen. If you’re a fan of the series, this is a must-have game for your PSP collection.
