Story

Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando picks up about a year after the first game‘s events. Ratchet and Clank are now heroes for having saved the galaxy and are starring in a TV show called Behind the Hero, which is about famous heroes. The life of heroes now seems quite boring. Then, during an interview, Ratchet and Clank are teleported to the Bogon galaxy, where they meet Abercrombie Fizzwidget, CEO of MegaCorp. He tells them a thief has stolen the Proto Pet, a cute little blue creature and science experiment from MegaCorp, and they need Ratchet and Clank’s help. And so your story of kidnapping, betrayal, and even the return of space heroes begins.

Gameplay

The gameplay in Going Commando is largely the same as the first game but with expansions in some key areas. Now, there is strafing, which is a welcome addition to the controls. With strafing, the developers could put more enemies on screen without making them impossible to take out. This means a lot is happening on the screen at once, and you have to stay alert.

There are lots of new weapons to deal with the extra enemies. Insomniac Games assembled an impressive collection of new spins on old gun ideas and completely new guns that make you wonder why every game doesn’t have them. There are grenade launchers and rockets, as well as lava guns shooting lava and sheepinators, turning enemies into sheep. Like the first game, you collect bolts from crates and enemies to buy new guns. But unlike the first game, there is a new upgrade system for each gun. Each kill earns you experience, and after enough, the weapon will upgrade to the next level, increasing firepower and adding abilities.

The levels in Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando also got improvements. Now, there is more going on in the background, making you feel like you’re running through a living planet. You can stop to take in the impressive sights.

The series progressed from a fun original game to a completely innovative series, not just copying what came before. This game became a genre leader, perfecting new ideas on their first try. It’s hard to imagine someone playing this game and not enjoying it.
