Ratchet & Clank ROM Description

Ratchet and Clank is a third-person shooter platformer that focuses more on shooting than most games in the genre. It is developed by Insomniac Games, known for the Spyro the Dragon series on the original PlayStation and the Resistance series on PlayStation 3.

In Ratchet and Clank, you play as Ratchet, a furry cat-like mechanic who befriends the small robot Clank after Clank witnesses a plan to destroy the universe. Clank escapes and crashes on the nearest planet, where he meets Ratchet, who is working on a spaceship. After making a quick deal, Ratchet agrees to take Clank to meet Captain Qwark, the galaxy’s superhero, to try and convince him to help their cause. The two decide to work together to save the galaxy from the evil Chairman Drek, who plans to create a new super planet by destroying all other planets.

Characters and Story

The characters in Ratchet and Clank are the real driving force. The story is fun and interesting and you always look forward to the next cutscene. The game has great humor with many laugh-out-loud moments during cutscenes that never feel forced. All this would not be very sensible if the gameplay was not good, and thankfully, that is not the case.

Gameplay

The platforming sections are difficult but not due to controls; rather, they are good old-fashioned challenges. I rarely felt cheated into death. There are many gadgets to help you move throughout the world. Clank becomes a functional sidekick, turning into a helicopter to reach far platforms and an underwater jet to make swimming easier. The game is a platformer, but the guns and shooting really steal the show.

As great as the characters are, the weapons are the real stars. There are over 20 different guns, each bringing something unique. The weapons range from Ratchet’s trusty wrench to oversized rocket launchers. No two guns are the same. Destroying enemies and crates gives you bolts to spend on new guns and ammo.

Levels and Environments

Ratchet and Clank’s journey takes them across many different planets in the galaxy, each one distinct. Of course, there are jungle and ice worlds, but also more original planets like Chairman Drek’s toxic home planet, forcing you to find a gas mask before landing safely. You also run an obstacle course just to be yelled at by an instructor about your poor performance.

Conclusion

This is a great game to replay multiple times. After completing it, you can start over with all weapons and abilities. I love going back to earlier hard sections with a powered-up rocket launcher to teach level 1 enemies a lesson. Replaying is not just an option but recommended.

The game’s theme is variety – from weapons to worlds to characters. You never feel bored since everything stays fresh and original, keeping you coming back for more.
