Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando, the sequel to the first Ratchet and Clank released in 2002, reinvented the platformer gameplay in many ways by shifting the focus away from jumping between platforms, and instead focusing on weapons and an interesting mission system.

The game introduces an extremely diverse and fun weapon and upgrade system. Each new weapon picked up gains experience when used, and when enough is accumulated, it upgrades into a more powerful weapon. Most new weapons can be upgraded this way. Ratchet also collects experience points, though not displayed, which at certain thresholds unlocks additional health bars to make you stronger. The game’s difficulty ramps up and enemies also become smarter. Not only are enemies more powerful, you have to change tactics as you progress since they become more difficult in both HP and tactics.

The game also has small side sections for unwinding such as hoverbike racing and space combat. You can also unlock a spaceship upgrade area to purchase better weapons and shields. Most of the minigames are optional but each has a challenge that needs to be completed. These usually yield a reward required to continue the story.
