Dark Angel is a fighting game developed by Radical Entertainment, published by Sierra Entertainment, and released for PS2 and Xbox in November 2002.

The plot focuses on Max – a super soldier genetically enhanced as a child and now an adult- fighting crime in Seattle and infiltrating sinister companies. It all takes place in the distant future of 2019 when the United States is plunged into complete chaos due to a giant EMP explosion that destroys much of the country’s electrical equipment. Max wasn’t the only child experimented on during that time. She tries to find and save other survivors of the dark organization that is performing experiments on these children.

Dark Angel followed the trend of most game adaptations of the period, being essentially a pure beat ’em-up game. You control the main character, moving through areas, punching, kicking, jumping, and grappling. There are many different combos based on key presses. Max has cool moves because she is a super soldier: extremely fast, strong, can climb walls, has sharp eyesight, and can accumulate Rage to activate quickly, doubling damage.

The fighting mechanism is quite good as you can also interact with the surrounding environment by throwing enemies into trash cans or through glass. The game also uses slow-motion effects inspired by the series to illustrate Max’s speed and style, which is great. You can also pick up weapons to increase your attack power and use electric guns to take down enemies in high positions.

The rest are decent boss battles to supplement the game’s progression.

Graphics-wise, Dark Angel doesn’t look bad for a PS2 game. The environment is not too creative, but the objects are well-designed. The graphics seem limited by the PS2 system’s hardware, but the game has built it very impressively, considering the dark world setting.

The character design and animation are also great. Max looks smooth and stylish. There is also an attempt to create some artistic atmosphere in the cutscenes.

Dark Angel is a game with a good combat system, good graphics and destruction effects, and a plot closely following the original. This game will definitely please fans of the original series.
