The Guitar Hero series has finally made sweet music with the metal gods in Guitar Hero: Metallica for Play Station 2.

Metallica made an impression on the series as the second game focused entirely on one band. But unlike previous versions, Metallica was the first to use the world tour template, bringing back the studio mode and four-player band sessions.

In terms of stage performance, getting through each gig in career mode is still the top priority, only now the rules have been loosened a bit. Instead of having to complete each individual set, you only need to earn enough stars through each successive play, allowing players to skip past difficult tracks and choose the path they want. This flexible progression structure makes career mode feel more accessible, while still maintaining a sense of accomplishment with unlockable rewards, song facts, and rock rankings.

If you want to shred with some friends, the ever-popular quick-play mode is now more accessible than ever with all songs unlocked from the start, eliminating the need for career progression or codes for those impromptu jam sessions. And if you can’t find anyone to play with, you can use the nifty feature the game calls Drum Over, which lets you play any percussion track the way you want with drum, snare, bass, and cymbal samples taken straight from the song.

There are no noticeable leaps in detail or quality, but the game has a cleaner, rearranged interface with different indicators as well as a comprehensive motion capture index modeled on Metallica themselves. The band’s gestures and animations are among the most convincing in the series to date, and the on-stage choreography along with each song is noticeably more authentic.

Guitar Hero: Aerosmith for PS2 brings back the best of this series, and is sure to please both metal fans and Guitar Hero fans.
