Acorn BBC Micro Collections (1981) ROM Description
The British Broadcasting Corporation’s BBC Computer Literacy Project used a line of microcomputers and related peripherals called the BBC Microcomputer System, or BBC Micro. These devices were created and manufactured by the Acorn Computer firm. Built with an emphasis on education, it stood out for the quality of its operating system, expandability, and durability.
Acorn won the contract with Proton, a quickly prototyped replacement for their Atom computer, after the Literacy Project requested proposals for a computer to accompany the TV shows and books. Acorn’s fortunes were drastically altered when the system, now known as the BBC Micro, was used by most UK schools. Despite its expensive price, it was somewhat successful as a home computer in the UK. Additionally, Acorn utilized the device to create and simulate the widely used ARM architecture for embedded applications. Regarding production volume, as of 2013, ARM is the 32-bit instruction set architecture that is most extensively used worldwide.
