Additional information
Designed and produced by Nintendo, the 32-bit table-top video game device known as Virtual Boy was Published in 1995 and was positioned as the first console able to show stereoscopic 3D visuals. Placing their head against the eyepiece to view a red monochrome display, the player operates the console in a way like a head-mounted display. The illusion of depth in the games comes from a parallax effect. Sales fell short of expectations; Nintendo stopped distributing and developing games by early 1996, just producing 22 games for the system.
Development of the Virtual Boy started under the VR32 project designation four years ago. Nintendo secured a license to employ 3D LED eyepiece technology, which was first created by the American business Reflection Technology. It also developed a Chinese facility just for Virtual Boy production. High expenditures and possible health issues led to the down-scaling of the console technology throughout development. Moreover, a growing portion of corporate funds were being diverted to Nintendo 64 development. Virtual Boy software was hardly used by lead Nintendo game creator Shigeru Miyamoto. In order to concentrate on the Nintendo 64 development, the incomplete device was launched onto the market in 1995.
Critics criticized the Virtual Boy, which also became a financial flop. Its failure has been attributed to its exorbitant pricing, monochromatic display, poor 3D effect, lack of real mobility, health issues, and low-quality games. Constantly declining prices had little effect on its unfavorable reaction. Later years saw the reemergence of 3D technology in video game systems, including Nintendo’s own 3D portable system, under considerable success. The second lowest-selling platform Nintendo has released after the 64DD is the Virtual Boy.
