Super Mario Maker ROM Description
No matter who you are, I bet you probably grew up with some sort of 2D Mario game. Whether you’re older and played on the NES or Super Nintendo, or you’re a younger gamer who started with the New Super Mario Bros series, with the release of Super Mario Maker on the Wii U, you have the chance to create the levels you loved as a kid.
Level Creation Tools
On the Wii U, Super Mario Maker is divided into two parts: pre-made levels and creative play. The creative tools are amazing. You’re given elements from many different 2D Mario games over the years. You can make levels that look like they were designed from the original Super Mario, Super Mario Bros 3, Super Mario World, or New Super Mario Bros U. Some items even span generations, so if there’s an item in Mario Bros 1 that wasn’t in later games, it will either have a newer version or be replaced with a similar item from later generations.
The tools at your disposal are truly unlimited. You can access length, layout, elements, and even levels’ time limits. Making a level is as simple as dragging and dropping elements into the level and hitting play. Everything works smoothly. You can be making a level and hit play, and now you’re playing your level, if you notice something is wrong, you can jump back to edit very quickly and now you’re editing the level again. It works very nicely.
Unlocking More Content
As you complete some initial levels, you’ll unlock new elements and level times from different Mario Bros games over the years. There are even options to add sound effects and filters to the gameplay for a few seconds, and by using the gamepad’s mic, you can also record your own sound effects. If I don’t see many John Cena meme levels online this week, I’ll be disappointed in you, internet.
Complex and Creative Levels
Aside from traditional Mario platforming-style levels, you can also use the tools at your disposal to create much more complex levels with the feel of other games like Metroid and The Legend of Zelda. There have already been some amazing creations online using this tool to make really impressive Rube Goldberg machine-like contraptions.
Sharing and Discovering Levels Online
Speaking of online features, you can share your creations online for others to play, and you’ll get notifications in Super Mario Maker whenever someone plays your level. People online can rate your levels and you’ll earn some minor medals on your player card. Nintendo has featured and highest-rated sections, so players can find some of the best levels and creators online. You can even follow creators you like.
Tons of Levels to Play
Creating and sharing your levels is only half the fun of Super Mario Maker. The other half comes from the endless levels for you to play. Instead of a traditional campaign, you have the 10 Mario Challenge, where Nintendo will provide you with a set of 8 sample levels to play as if you’re playing a world in a traditional Mario game. Then, you can take Nintendo’s sample levels and edit them in the creation tool.
There’s also the 100 Mario Challenge, where you’re given 100 lives to complete a set of 8 easy, 16 normal, or expert levels. These levels are chosen randomly from many levels uploaded online by players like you. If a level you’re playing is a bit too hard for you, you can swipe on the gamepad to skip to the next one.
amiibo Compatibility
The game also supports amiibo. You scan your amiibo and that character will become a costume for Mario to wear. This means you can play through all the levels as an Inkling from Splatoon, Sonic from Sonic the Hedgehog, or even Link from The Legend of Zelda. It’s weird but very fun. Of course, this feature will be disabled if you play this game on an emulator.
Conclusion
Overall, Super Mario Maker for the Wii U is amazing. There are so many tools for you to use; you could be making levels for weeks. And the countless creations people upload online will be at your fingertips. Essentially, Super Mario Maker is an endless 2D Mario game where you’ll always have levels to play until you make your own. Now you can download the ROM to play it for free on a Wii U emulator.
Note: Nintendo also released this game in a version for the 3DS system. It makes some pretty good changes, but at its core, the main elements of the game remain intact.
