Mario Kart 8 for the Wii U is the eighth installment of this legendary racing game series from Nintendo. And, like the previous entries, we have quite an interesting storyline to enjoy. Mario Kart is the Mushroom Kingdom’s form of punishment for anyone who dares to kidnap royal members by forcing them to fight in life-threatening races. All for the entertainment of a nation of mutated mushroom people. It sounds bizarre, but that’s what you’ll see in this game.

The gameplay is fun, as usual. You can choose a racer from a list of 30 characters from the Super Mario series. You’ll encounter familiar characters like Mario, Bowser, Toad, Princess Peach, etc. But for the first time, the Koopalings are no longer Bowser’s children, thanks to the appearance of Bowser Jr (just a smaller-sized Bowser). The racer list also includes ridiculous characters like Baby Rosalina and Pink Gold Peach. Whoever it is, each racer in Mario Kart 8 has unique characteristics that you can choose to suit your playing style.

Mario Kart 8 introduces a completely new mechanic in the series: anti-gravity sections. You’ll find some areas of the track that allow you to race on walls or even completely upside down. This is an interesting idea that doesn’t really add or subtract anything from the overall game, but adding this really blurs the line that turns Mario Kart into a slower version of F-Zero.

Mario Kart 8 for Wii U adds some new weapons, such as the Piranha Plant, which is basically like the Invincibility Star, except it attacks nearby enemies, so you don’t have to run into them. They will also collect coins and remove obstacles. But overall, Mario Kart 8 delivers one of the most unique and somewhat strangest playing experiences in the series. It’s more similar to the Mario Kart Arcade games, with a lot of things going on in the background of the shiny tracks. Along with new upgrades, it also goes back to its original mechanics, such as removing the ability to hold items behind the kart to pick up another item.
