In Shovel Knight, you are literally a shovel knight, a knight with a shovel as a weapon. You dig, fight, and clear everything out of the way. You do all that to find your partner, Shield Knight, who disappeared after encountering a cursed amulet in the Tower of Fate. A simple hero in a simple story utilizing simple gameplay through simple level design and all combined together makes for a great game.

Shovel Knight is a blend of many things. The music reminds us of Megaman. The world map is like something in Mario 3. The backgrounds and general themes are like Castlevania. The level design takes advantage of the spike thrust like DuckTales did. And many other things as well.

The game executes all of these very well. Precise hit detection. Wonderful music. Traversing the towns is really fun. There is magic you get to choose to learn, and the spike thrust is really enjoyable. If you like challenging platformers with retro 8-bit graphics, then Shovel Knight should be at the top of your list.
