Bayonetta 2 continues the success of the first installment to explore further the story revolving around the amnesiac witch protagonist, Bayonetta. The game was released exclusively on Nintendo’s Wii U in 2014, followed by a re-release on the Switch system in 2019.

Story and Setting

Bayonetta, also known as Cereza, is an Umbra witch and overseer of darkness. She is frequently embroiled in the ongoing war between heaven and hell. After recovering from amnesia in the previous game and befriending rival witch Jeanne, Bayonetta’s shopping trip is interrupted by angels attacking the city with the help of demons.

The angels show who’s boss, but dealing with demons is always dangerous. Things go wrong, and Jeanne’s soul gets dragged down to hell. Bayonetta sets out to rescue her friend.

Gameplay and Mechanics

Bayonetta 2 is similar to the first game in many respects, with fast-paced, flashy combat, magic, diverse weapons, and big explosions. Now, Bayonetta must set out to rescue Jeanne’s soul from eternal torment in hell. You control the sultry heroine as she dodges, spins, and attacks with various weapons to blast through the gates of hell.

The game’s highlights come not only from Bayonetta’s sexy look but also the fast-paced action gameplay with insane combo chains. Basically, you need to string together attack combinations, but even if you don’t know how to do so, you can still take down enemies with button mashing.

Graphics and Sound

Bayonetta 2’s graphics are markedly better than its predecessor. The character models remain top-notch, but the textures are cleaner, lighting and details look cinematic. The sound quality is also excellent. There are forceful sound effects, great voice acting that suits the chaotic combat, and some new music that makes the experience more enjoyable.

Controversial themes aside, Bayonetta 2 is an excellent Wii U action game. The gameplay has been refined, and upgrades have been made to both graphics and audio. It’s a great addition to your Wii U ROM collection.
