Sonic Frontiers for Nintendo Switch is set on the Starfall Islands, an archipelago of 5 islands with completely different geography: Kronos is vast grasslands, Ares is a desolate desert, Chaos is a rugged volcanic region, etc. What these islands have in common is that they are filled with rails, springs, and vehicles that any Sonic fan is very familiar with. On these islands, Sonic will go to rescue his three friends Amy, Knuckles, and Tails.

Scattered throughout the open world of Sonic Frontiers are countless side missions, with a wide variety of extremely diverse types, from challenging puzzles, and speed runs to the finish line, to…jump rope, and weed pulling.

These missions both reveal parts of the map and create more rails to connect to the intricate rail network, opening up new paths for players to explore further.

Overall, the gameplay loop of Sonic Frontiers is a cycle. First, the player will have to collect gears (from bosses, missions, etc.), then use the gears to “unlock” mission levels called Cyber Space.

When completing each level, the player will receive a different number of keys depending on the number of missions in the level that the player completes, such as collecting all the red stars or completing under a certain time threshold.

On each island, there are also some “minor” bosses (called Guardians), and most of them are so spectacular that each fight makes the writer feel like he’s playing…Shadows of the Colossus.

Sonic Frontiers provides a fresh and exciting experience for Sonic fans, with a vast open world to explore, along with diverse gameplay and an engaging story.
