Sonic Superstars ROM Description

Sonic Superstars brings Sonic the Hedgehog back to his 2D roots with a different art style, new Chaos Emerald powers, and co-op gameplay. The evil Dr. Eggman has returned with his villainous schemes, along with the return of Fang the Hunter and the new character Trip the Sungazer.

Sonic Superstars utilizes the signature classic Sonic gameplay and it succeeds. The control mechanism is very simple with buttons A or B used to jump, while the left stick is used to move. Holding the stick down and pressing one of the two jump buttons will speed boost so you can dash forward. Pressing down while running will curl you into a ball to defeat enemies or break walls. You will do a spinning attack when jumping, also used to take down enemies. Your health is marked by the number of Rings you hold. Whenever you are attacked, you will drop all your Rings and can pick them up again. If attacked without Rings, you will lose a life and go back to the last checkpoint.

Sonic Superstars allows you to freely choose which character to play throughout the game, however, some stages are reserved exclusively for certain characters. Additionally, bonus stages that you need to unlock by collecting fruit pieces, can be found hidden in levels or in a roulette wheel at the end of act 2.

Boss battles in 2D Sonic games often happen at a fast and rough pace because you can pick up dropped Rings when attacked, but Sonic Superstars requires more. The game has intelligently designed Eggman robots and they often come with puzzle elements that you are forced to solve in order to find a way to attack.

The graphics are also a plus point. Sonic Superstars ditched the 16-bit pixel art of the previous version and applied a 2.5D art style that looks quite impressive. Our main character has a classic design, looking slightly chibi compared to other 3D games but generally okay. The levels have distinct themes and vibrant colors.
