Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor ROM Description
The Bible tells that long ago, in order to prevent mankind from completing the Tower of Babel to reach heaven, God divided people into different races and languages. Without a common language, the Tower of Babel seemed like it could never be built, and mankind appeared destined to forever dream of God. But in the 20th century, the internet became a universal language across the globe. And the ancient story of the Tower of Babel was continued in Tokyo…
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor was the first game in the Shin Megami Tensei series to appear on a Nintendo system, but the game still exhibited the core trademarks of the franchise very well. On a beautiful day, you receive COMPs with the ability to summon evil demons. Surviving an encounter with them, you realize in horror that the part of Tokyo you live in has been completely isolated from the outside world: No electricity, no water, and all roads blocked, while inside, demons begin to appear everywhere.
Gameplay
The battle system of the game is quite simple yet very deep: A maximum of 3 vs 3 battles, where each team has 1 leader (for the player it’s you or a member of your party), and whichever side has their leader defeated loses. However, whether that is easy or hard depends on how you attack: Hitting the opponent’s weakness can give you extra turns, and some demons have skills to protect the leader from all attacks… After each fight, the player receives exp and macca (the currency in the game) to buy new demons. This is necessary because, unlike humans, demons have fixed skills, and their stats increase very slowly. Replacing old low-level demons with stronger high-level ones is very common. There are over 100 types of demons for you to freely choose from, including many famous names like Odin, Thor, Cu Chulain, Sun Wukong…
Exploring the ruined city
Since you are trapped in a city, obviously, no one sits around waiting for demons to come kill them. You use the time during the day to go everywhere, both to find a way out, or simply to prevent some accidents and incidents caused by demons. These events can affect the later storyline or just be irrelevant events; for example, a character could be killed by demons, but in the next playthrough, you can completely prevent that from happening.
Diverse mission system
The depth of gameplay is also shown in the skill crack system in the game. The player completely starts with nothing, but in clashes with demons, you can steal their skills. This learning is entirely proactive by the player, so very powerful combos can appear later, even instantly taking out enemies before they can do anything. With 6 characters, you can have 6 different builds suitable for different situations. You can also transfer learned skills to demons, freely customizing your lineup as desired. Or, if you want high-level demons with skills you like, just fuse them into what you want, and you’ll have the demon you want immediately. Over 100 types of demons will create countless fusion possibilities, leaving the player to explore freely.
Impressive graphics
In terms of graphics, the game also does not disappoint. The narrow hardware capacity of the Nintendo DS was exploited maximally to showcase everything: from backgrounds, demon designs, characters in the game, attacks. The storyline is compelling enough to attract most players until the end, plus with 6 endings to choose from, each ending unlocks special demons – making the replay value very high.
