Pokémon Sun and Moon ROM Description

While Pokémon was far from faltering by the time of its 20th anniversary in 2016 (it had successfully made the transition to 3D with Pokémon X & Y before transporting players back to the Hoenn region using the same aesthetic for the Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire remakes) Game Freak decided that its player base had earned a much- needed getaway. Separating the series from what had come before by being a welcome mixture of cool-breeze nights and shining solar rays, Pokémon Sun & Moon marked at time when the series saw fit to kick back and relax a little.

Even by of Pokémon standards, this simple shakeup in setting was enough for the seventh Generation to evoke a much cheerier tone overall, with the Hawaii-inspired Alola region challenging players to conquer four unique islands in the grand pursuit to be the best Pokémon Trainer out there. The developers at Game Freak were so committed to Sun & Moon’s unabashedly tropical aesthetic, in fact, that the team made several work trips to the Hawaiian archipelago during the course of development. The sights they witnessed went on to not only inspire Alola itself but also the 81 new species of Pokémon set to debut.

Feeling the Holiday Atmosphere

Sun & Moon’s holiday atmosphere is immediately felt as soon as you start the game. As a youngster who’s recently made the move from Kanto all the way to Alola’s Melemele island shortly after having received an invite from your cousin Professor Kukui, we’re instantly greeted to a stylish zooming shot of the region we’re destined to explore.

There’s alleged new species of Pokémon in Alola in desperate need of catching, you see, and only the curiosity of an up-and-coming Trainer will do. Before you know it, you’re swept up in a story that’s familiar but with a few creative spins. Not only are you attempting to become a champion. You’re tasked with discovering the secret of the Ultra Beasts and stopping members of the hip-hop-loving Team Skull, too.

Exploring Alola’s Islands

The Nintendo 3DS still may not have been a graphical powerhouse compared to, say, its rival the PlayStation Vita, but you can tell that the 3D tech had advanced remarkably since the release of Pokémon X & Y two years prior. For one thing, character models no longer appeared squat, or ‘chibi’, like they used to. Instead, they’re now made up of realistic-looking proportions, which is a small change, but makes a huge difference to trainer customisation. Then you have the distinct appearances of Alola’s four islands. Whether it’s in the maze-like layout of Ula’ula’s Haina desert to the intimidating grandeur of Wela Volcano Park found on Akala, the slight step up in visual quality only aids Sun & Moon’s improved location variety – all do well to draw you closer into this Poké-fied version of an island paradise.

Yes, the tropical overtones can be found pretty much everywhere in Sun & Moon, with the most prominent example being the various Alolan forms of popular first-Generation Pokémon. Think you know what a Dugtrio looks like? Think again. Because, similar to the surfers you might find chilling out on Akala Island’s Hano Beach, in Alola all three of its heads now tout long, wavey golden locks. Variants like this offer up a nice twist on beloved Pokémon species that fans were familiar with, cleverly explained in-universe as having developed different visual traits due to the change in territory. That latter explanation also ensures Alolan forms aren’t just a superficial change; they will often be made up of different types or dual types and even possess whole new abilities, making them ideal for breeding in the metagame.

The Improved Visuals

Sun & Moon played host to the most species ever featured in a Pokémon game at the time, with there being a total of 802 to hunt, capture and train. This included a trio of new starters in Popplio (a water sea lion), Litten (a fiery cat) and Rowlet (a grass-type owl) available to choose from the start of your adventure, all of whom make for an appropriately tough choice thanks to their excelle designs. Other notable Pokémon highlights consist of Palossand the spectral sandcastle, Pikachu imposter Mimikyu, and each of Oricorio’s Fire, Electric, Psychic and Ghost forms (as dictated by the coloured nectar you feed it).
