Metroid Prime was released on the Nintendo GameCube on November 18, 2002. It is a first-person action-adventure game set in the main Metroid universe. This game has been remade and released on the Nintendo Switch in 2023. If you want a full HD graphics experience, the Switch version is a good choice, but if you want the original gameplay experience, this GameCube version is really amazing.

Metroid Prime does not shove the story in your face and requires you to discover it. The main focus of the game is exploration, action, and puzzle solving. The story is still there if you want to learn about it. Bounty hunter Samus Aran receives a distress signal from the gigantic Orphan ship operated by space pirates. She arrives reluctantly, only to find the crew massacred. As she explores the Orphan ship and delves deeper into its corpse-strewn corridors, you immediately feel the Metroid world seeping through the scene. The scene ends with an epic boss battle, a thrilling escape from the exploding steel belly of the Orphan ship, and an emergency landing on the planet Talon IV, where Samus pursues her nemesis only to realize a greater danger awaits her.

Metroid Prime maintains the basic formula of the Metroid series despite having transitioned to a 3D model. You start the game almost powerless and can only explore a small portion of the map until you start getting suit upgrades. When you acquire suit upgrades, you will be able to explore more and more new areas of the map as well as find secrets, power-ups, and upgrades in older areas. So by the end of the game, once you’ve found all the suit upgrades, you should be able to explore every nook and cranny and 100% complete the game if you want. This is basically what a Metroidvania game is, and it has been the formula the Metroid series has followed from the very beginning.
