The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening ROM Description
Among The Legend of Zelda games, Link’s Awakening is one of the most bizarre titles. There is no Hyrule kingdom, no Triforce, not even the Master Sword. In fact, the game also lacks the typical puzzles or dungeons.
Link’s Awakening plays similarly to A Link to the Past because it was developed by the same team two years later.
An Odd Name for a Zelda Game
Link’s Awakening is an odd title because first, Zelda is not even in this game. Second, you don’t even play as Link but control a character named Marin. There are many Mario characters, evil Kirby, and get this – the entire game takes place inside a fish’s dream.
Excellent on the Switch
The Switch version is truly amazing. 2D Zelda games have always been more focused and faster-paced than the 3D installments, but the remake takes the shortest Zelda and compresses it into a tiny glossy gem. This makes for a game where every step feels like ten, and flying across the map with your hookshot is magical. Once accustomed to Zelda’s quirky logic, this is perhaps the most replayable game in the series.
Unique Visuals
The remade graphics have a glossy plastic sheen, suggesting a child playing with toys. The houses are full of little details depicting the people living inside. Although the game has a great soundtrack, it is barely referenced in subsequent games, adding to its uniqueness.
A Dreamlike, Quirky World
The world of Koholint is dreamlike and mysterious yet full of quirky characters. There is even an owl. The plot is also very similar to that of David Lynch’s later film Mulholland Drive. Most Zelda games revolve around the battle between good and evil, where your goal is to save the world. But in Link’s Awakening, you gradually discover your goal this time is to destroy the world.
Illogical Like a Dream
Like a dream, Link’s Awakening can be bizarre and illogical. Koholint Island may be the most idyllic place Link has ever been, but sometimes, in life, what you have to do is the last thing you want to like waking up and getting out of bed. That’s why this is one of my favorite Zelda games.
