The Samurai Shodown or Samurai Spirits series began back in 1993 when the first game in the series was released in arcades and on the Neo Geo home system. Since then, 11 main entries in the series have been released. The game has finally made its way onto the Nintendo Switch system with a reboot released in 2019.

Samurai Shodown is set in feudal Japan during the 18th century, one year before the events of the first game. You can choose from 17 characters to engage in one-on-one duels against an opponent.

A signature of Samurai Shodown is its extremely tense gameplay, making you approach battles in a more calculated way compared to other fighting games. It feels more like a duel and thus provides a very different experience. Oddly, despite the more methodical nature of battles, they can also be quite fast-paced at times due to the huge damage weapons can inflict. One mistake can cost you the bout instantly.

Returning from previous entries is the rage gauge at the bottom of the screen, which will slowly fill up as the battle progresses. Another feature is rage explosion, which will freeze the timer when activated and greatly increase your attack power. You can also only use certain powerful moves like weapon flipping techniques while in this state, although using such a move will end the rage explosion. Rage explosion can only be used once per match, so it is essential to grasp the best timing to use it in order to turn the tide of battle.

The main content of Samurai Shodown revolves around story mode. It tells the tale of your chosen character through cutscenes at the start of your journey and after every few fights. We also have other options like gauntlet mode, survival mode, and time trial mode. It also has online play available with ranked and casual matches.
