The game tells the revenge story of the main character Yi, a pragmatic scientist and powerful martial artist. He launches a revenge campaign against New Kunlun, a highly advanced society from which he was exiled for some reason. After a near-death altercation with the ruling council, Yi recovers amongst the primitive Apemen outside of New Kunlun and befriends a young orphan named Song Song, whom he takes under his wing. Throughout the game, you’ll learn about Yi’s past, the origins of New Kunlun, and ultimately the mystery surrounding Yi’s break with the council, also known as the Sols.

Nine Sols is a typical 2D metroidvania with characteristic gameplay elements combined with stunning graphics. Clearly, the gameplay is the main selling point of this game. You will control the main character using basic martial arts skills such as double jump, dash, and grappling hook. The unique defense-focused approach to combat is a great thing. Eventually, you’ll unlock four different styles of situational parry moves. Some enemy attacks will require you to parry while airborne or charge up while grounded to deflect a particularly powerful strike.

Nine Sols impresses with its graphics. The developer has built a game world full of inspiring artistic flair. The watercolor aesthetic immediately catches your eye with the sophistication of the beautiful landscapes, cold laboratories, and dank temples. All of them are meticulously polished and express the story of the game. Besides, the corners of the map will have a lot of secrets and collectibles that you will come across. Don’t forget to collect them all to help enhance Yi’s attributes or just to trigger memorable character moments.
