Gunstar Heroes is just awesome in every aspect. We could talk about it all day and not get bored. Visually, it looks amazing. The soundtrack fits perfectly with the flawless controls and the weapon system is very interesting. The level design complements your diverse abilities perfectly. The bosses are simply fantastic and satisfying to conquer.

The weapon system is especially interesting because you can hold two of the four weapons at a time: laser, flamethrower, homing, and rapid fire. You can hold two at once, switch between them, and combine them. So basically you have 14 weapons. My favorite is the homing flamethrower, so awesome.

That’s not the only way to attack. You can also throw enemies at each other like a fighting game, it starts with 4 Mega Man style levels to choose from, and the stages are long, varied environments. The levels utilize the ceiling flip mechanic from Metal Storm when you get surrounded on all sides.

The boss battles have you fighting on planes. There’s even a shoot ’em up style stage. One thing that sets Gunstar Heroes apart from other run and guns is that it’s not a one-hit death like Contra. Your health is displayed numerically, at 0 you die and have to restart the stage. That’s fair, especially with the unlimited continues.
